Why I Believe “Wine Wednesday” Should Happen Every Wednesday

1960097_10151887512221791_1574979138_n

The word wine starts with “w” and so does Wednesday–so why not combine the two?! Wednesday is the halfway point of the week, otherwise known as “hump day”. Usually for me at the end of a Wednesday, I sit on my couch and open up a bottle of wine. That bottle gives me the motivation I need to finish the last stretch of my long week. It’s like a trophy of almost making it to the weekend.

It seems that almost every Wednesday I have my feet propped up with a glass of wine in my hand. So I’ve started to establish my Wednesdays as “Wine Wednesdays”. When I wake up that morning (dreading I still have two more days until the weekend) I realize that a bottle of wine will be waiting for me at home because it is Wine Wednesday! It makes the day a little more bearable!

I’ve made it my own little tradition. It’s nice to have only simple decisions when I come home from a long hump day, those being “Red or White?” and “Which Lolita Wine Glass should I use?” So tonight, I will be doing just that and I highly suggest that you do the same!

Travel to Your Favorite Place Without Leaving Your House!

Take your guests to your home state, city, or just your favorite place with a fun themed party! Whether or not you live there, it is so much fun to set up a party using the unique qualities and styles from your chosen place.

For example, if you are celebrating Tennessee (using my new Tennessee Wine Glass of course!), decorate with Elvis mementos (a classic Elvis cutout would do!), guitars, and string lights. Tennessee is a state known for its music—therefore, play some B.B. King, Elvis, or your favorite country music. Justin Timberlake is from Tennessee, that counts too right?! Also don’t forget to serve what Tennessee is especially famous for, BBQ… and maybe even Elvis’ favorite fried peanut butter and banana sandwiches!

Of course, this Tennessee party is only just a reference to help you to throw your own Favorite Place Celebration. These parties are easy and also don’t require costumes! Check out all of our “Favorite Places” glasses to see where you can take your friends without having to leave your house!

Have a “TGIF” Happy Hour!

It’s Friday, time to do a little dance…your cocktail mixing dance…and get your groove on! Our lives are like a martini: Shaken or stirred and sometimes on the rocks, it always surprises us with a little twist. And by Friday, well, we all need a little relief!!

TGIF, time for a happy hour! Here is a great way to unwind and relax with some friends, right at home. Cast your cares away, leave them at the office, close the laptop. Surprise your friends with a cocktail that just says, “I am yours, you are mine,” and a fun atmosphere that just melts the worries away.

ATMOSPHERE

For your TGIF Happy Hour, the time will go effortlessly with just a little bit of planning!! Even impromptu happy hours should evoke just a little bit of panache. By handing your guests your signature cocktail the second they hit the door, you’ve got that down! And with a fabulous after work cocktail music playlist and easy appetizers done ahead of time, even the hostess or host can relax!

For the TGIF theme, it is fun to have a simple color palette. Paper napkins will do for this fete. Here, I have turquoise, lime green, carnation, and violet. TGIF party-ware by Lolita® is a fun addition!

I love doing an invitation for this happy hour! Any cocktail time invite will do, or do an e-vite…no RSVP necessary, just make sure you have enough food and drinks to serve the number of people you invite…that way, you are covered when someone brings a pal! This party is casual and meant to be a stop by!

Your drink should compliment your décor, and should be something that you KNOW everyone will like, so I have chosen the delicious Strawberry Sun cocktail. I use SMIRNOFF® flavored vodka as my vodka of choice…not only is it easier than creating or buying separate juices, it is the smoothest flavored vodka around.

I love to always have a focal point at any party. For TGIF, one 5’ table should suffice for food and drinks. Keep it simple! Mix your signature cocktail ahead of time, your appetizers, too. Keep ice on hand.

For a centerpiece, I like the giant martini glass idea, filled with snacks, such as blue corn tortilla chips with a dip nearby. Pretty napkins in the color palette and white appetizer plates are awesome. A few candles are nice. A bouquet of pink carnations, cut short and put in a small wide vase are a nice touch. I also love adding funky glassware, where you can mix and match shapes and colors to your hearts content!! Your bowls of drink garnishes will also add some fun to the table.

Purchase a chalkboard, yes, a chalkboard, and have chalk handy. Put the title: Why I am loving Friday….and have everyone write their biggest frustration of the week! A great conversation starter!

This would be an awesome party to bring out to the patio or balcony as well!

And as always, drink responsibly. Have the phone number of a cab company handy!

THE SIGNATURE DRINK

Strawberry Sun

  • 1.5 oz SMIRNOFF® Strawberry Flavored Vodka
  • 1 oz. pineapple juice
  • .5 oz. orange juice
  • 3 oz. lemon-lime soda

Shake the first 3 ingredients in a shaker with ice. Strain into an ice filled Collins glass. Top with the lemon-lime soda and stir. Garnish with a strawberry and a lime peel.

*For this party, mixing the Strawberry Sun ahead of time is fine! Just multiply this recipe by the number of drinks, and voila, you have enough in a pitcher ready to go!!! Add your garnishes before serving.

MENU

Corn Cakes with Lemon Chive Crème Fraiche

Grilled Mushroom-Cheddar Melts

Have a Girls’ Night In!

Gather the girls and celebrate each other and your friendships!

Science has proven that the nurturing female bonds are beneficial to our health. To preserve our sanity, we need to have connection time with our girlfriends on a frequent basis. What better way then to plan a Girls’ Night In? With a variety of fun cocktails, good food, and girly music, connecting has never been more enticing!

THERE ARE SO MANY WAYS TO DO THIS CELEBRATION!

First, decide what type of ‘Girls’ Night In’ you want to have. Will all the girls stay over? (We definitely want to relax here and not worry about driving, so why not?) Then it’s a PJ party with chick flicks (those movies that guys never want to watch, like the Vow, Before Sunset, etc.) and Sex in the City reruns. Have light, girly food. Don’t we love just nibbling once in awhile? Is it just a game night, such as Bunco? Is a friend getting married? Why have one “last night out”…have a “Last Night In!” Are you all moms? Have a kids clothing exchange. Or better yet, a book exchange!  Are your friends into home parties? Tupperware, Cabi clothing or Pampered Chef could become a fun excuse to shop, buy things you don’t really need and bond over cocktails without judgement!!

ATMOSPHERE

My favorite idea is to have a theme surrounding a cocktail, the delicious SMIRNOFF® Raspberry Twist cocktail! And, pink is the color of choice for décor.

Also, no guys! Unless he is willing to wear a tux and be the bartender, cook and waiter, he cannot attend.

Girly décor is easy. When you don’t have to worry about the men, all out girly is a must! Bring out the floral serving platter your mom gave you and your grandmother’s floral china and those antique etched glasses your husband doesn’t like. Drink out of your Lolita glassware!  The “Girls’ Night In” glass by Lolita would be perfect for this party, or the Girlfriend’s Rule glass. These are fun and easy and great even if your friends bring their favorite wine glass from home! Better yet, reward your friends with my new Personalize It party glass, everyone can sign each one and have it forever as a reminder who your peeps are!

I love flowers and candles.  I also think fun pink boas from your party store are fun for each girlfriend!! What a hoot!

I think that the focus of this party should be your kitchen table for the food.  Spread out the favorite tablecloth and put flowers in the middle. If you are doing party favors, come up with something girly, like your Lolita glasses (my acrylics are also great and very reasonably priced!) or some Hanky Pankies. Or even do a naughty or nice grab bag, and go crazy!! A suggested grab bag would be:

  • Lip gloss
  • Hanky Pankies
  • Mints
  • Tylenol
  • A “Tell Us a Secret” card
  • False Eyelashes
  • Boa
  • Bra Push ups
  • Gift certificate for Baby Store
  • Fake bubble gum cigarettes
  • Push up candy lipstick
  • Barbie clothes/shoes
  • Colored hair clip on
  • A mini bottle of SMIRNOFF®

A great party favor for your friends…SMIRNOFF® minis in Raspberry Flavor, with a ribbon and a name tag!

You get it…conversation starters! And just all around crazy.

Set your serving pieces for each dish out prior to the party. At party time, fill the dishes. Have a special area in your kitchen for the bar. Have a cold appetizer waiting outside if it’s nice out. Use fun paper napkins. I love a pink with a chartreuse green color palette for this party! For the cocktail, have your crystal out and ready to go…

Your food should be ready to serve the minute your girls arrive! So anything you can do ahead of time is great so YOU, the hostess, can relax with your friends!!

THE SIGNATURE COCKTAIL

This drink is oh-so refreshing and girly pink!

Raspberry Twist

  • 1.5 oz SMIRNOFF® Raspberry Flavored Vodka
  • .25 oz. fresh lemon juice
  • 2 dashes Peychaud’s Bitters
  • 1 oz. lemon-lime soda

Mix ingredients in a shaker with ice. Strain into an ice-filled rocks glass. Garnish with raspberries and lemon wheel.

MENU

Pink Radish and Avocado Crostini

Pesto Shrimp “Lollipops”

Beet Salad with Ricotta Salata and Pistachios

Lemon Mousse with Strawberries and Basil

And, it’s all about fun and games right?  Play the “I Never…” game! Go around the room with your friends and have them complete the sentence. A hysterical way to bond!! Also, who ever falls asleep first gets their bra frozen! Have fun and get a little wacky…when else can you be this free to be “just girls”?

And a little dancing never hurts, with tunes from your past that evoke the girlfriend in you!

THE PLAYLIST

Oh, and make sure to clean up very well before the guys get home! No sense in him finding a bra in the freezer.

It’s Game Night!

What could be more fun than assembling a group of fun people on an otherwise bland evening and provide a fabulously FUN game experience, food and drinks included?

A party where guests serve themselves (you bet, right out of a pitcher of cocktails) and small bites on small plates, better yet, a napkin…the games are the ROCK star, food and drinks the backup singers. No knives and forks are required.

ATMOSPHERE

Send out your Game Night invitation at least 2 weeks prior to the event! Here is a link to one I love:

Martini Suit Invitation

The “game” room should be all set up and raring to go! I love having a “playing card” color palette …green, black, red and yellow. Balloons are fun way to add color around the room. The Lolita® rocks glassware are fun to add to the party!

First, clear the room of furniture. Make sure you have a bell. Consider having your friends bring card tables if they have them and folding chairs, ahead of time if possible.

A different game for every 4 people works well.

Your goal is to set up “Game Stations”, allowing rotation between games every 20 minutes otherwise game players might get a little bored, so obviously the games must be pretty simple…no Monopoly, Bridge, Chess, etc.

Consider fun “gag” prizes. Lolita shot glasses are a fun party favor!!

GAME SUGGESTIONS

Reserve a spot for Twister! Nothing like a bunch of revelers giving it a spin.

Beanbag toss

Bunco is a wildly popular and fun dice game that women flock to. It can be simplified to one table and one game.  Check out the “Love My Bunco” game by Lolita.

Blackjack

Pictionary is always a crowd pleaser!

If the budget allows, you can even hire a blackjack dealer who will bring the table and everything to add that casino touch!

You could even have an arm wrestling table! Or, pull out the Wii…

IN CONCLUSION:

  • Choose an open room and pick exciting but simple game choices.
  • Have food out in a self-serve environment. Let everyone know where the drinks are.
  • Music:  Make sure you have an MP3 player and ask for people’s playlists. Easy!  People love sharing their music choices.
  • Ring a bell every half hour or so. Put someone, like a Designated Driver, in charge of this chore.

And remember, almost anything goes, well, except for Spin the Bottle, perhaps!

THE SIGNATURE COCKTAIL

This signature cocktail tastes a little like Orange soda.

Orange Majestic

  • 1.75 oz SMIRNOFF® Orange Flavored Vodka
  • .25 oz. simple syrup
  • 2 dashes Angostura® Bitters
  • 2 oz. soda water

Shake the first 3 ingredients in a shaker with ice. Strain into an ice-filled Collins glass. Top with soda water and stir. Garnish with orange slices and/or an orange peel twist.

*To create premade cocktails for your guests, just multiply the above by the number of people.

Envy: An Organically Green Party

Want to feel like a natural woman? Man? Go where nothing is concrete or plastic…have an “Envy” party where everything is organically green!

Our generation has become, thankfully, more earth friendly than those before us. We are getting excited again about using things that don’t create trash, that are good for us to eat, that can be grown in our own backyards.

Why not celebrate it? I think even your non-green friends would enjoy the exposure to a little green-ness, they will be green with envy, and will exit the party with ideas on how to enhance their own lives with a little organic flair!

ATMOSPHERE

This is an elegant dinner party…from the décor down to the last bite of dessert, your guests will be tantalized with organic flavors, sense awakening “green” cocktails, and gorgeous, natural décor. The earthy folk music in the background will only add to the natural feeling.

Get started with some recycled paper invitations. Send out 2-3 weeks prior to the party.

This is the perfect dinner to start about an hour before sunset for the ultimate “natural” atmosphere!

Have you ever wondered whether it saves more energy to use the dishwasher or to use paper? The answer is use glass and ceramic whenever possible versus creating disposables.

Set out interesting table cards that educate and become talking points, describing your setting and educating, such as:

  • All candles are 100% Beeswax…support Bee Colonization! (Not only is it cute but funny, too)
  • This table has been decorated with all natural products…
  • Feel earthy…eat this!
  • Introducing the Green Apple Envy!
  • Sip Your Veggies with this Avocado Martini ( this really is delicious!)

A vegan menu is suggested but you can always add some seafood or lean proteins for the fish-tarian and non-vegetarian guests.

If possible, have this party in your garden or backyard, but it is perfectly fine to have it in your apartment, balcony or rooftop!

Use an organic color palette such as off-white, eggplant, mint and sandy browns hues. Pull blooming branches from the forest and create an arbor for your entranceway.

For your table, cover your table with natural or organic burlap fabric. Use naturally dyed cotton pillowcases or burlap bags over chair backs and tie with raffia…better yet, use an assortment of antique chairs for their beautiful wood elements.

For your table setting, pull out all the crystal and china. Use clear glass votives and all natural beeswax candles. For your table centerpiece, layer branches in a circle as if building a wreath and put a large votive full of pebbles, leaves and sticks in the center (willows are a beautiful touch and can be found at your local florist).  If you live in the city and have trouble finding branches, just flower it up!! Dried flowers are also easy to find and you can save those for your next occasion.

Wrap your silverware in linen or cheesecloth and tie with raffia. Scatter your table with wildflowers. At each seat, put a little terracotta flowerpot with a name card, and pick a package of seeds for each guest to take home.

Serve water on ice from the tap in glass pitchers or glass-bottled still water. No plastic bottled waters at this party!

As your guests arrive, greet them with the signature drink for the Easy Being Green party, the Green Apple Envy.

THE SIGNATURE DRINK

Green Apple Envy

  • 1.25 oz SMIRNOFF® Green Apple Flavored Vodka
  • 1.25 oz. sour mix

Shake ingredients over ice. Strain into a martini glass. Garnish with apple slices.

Sip your veggies with:

Avocado Martini

  • 1.5 oz  Citrus Vodka by SMIRNOFF®
  • .5 oz Dry Vermouth
  • ½ cup ripe pulp from an avocado
  • 2 tbsp dulce de leche
  • 2 tbsp sweetened condensed milk
  • ¼ cup milk

Pour all of the ingredients into a blender and puree until smooth. Pour into a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake and strain into chilled martini glasses.

You can also offer organic or kosher wines and beers!

MENU

Here is a suggested all Vegan menu; if you prefer some proteins, add shrimp or chicken skewers.

The Best Guacamole

Zucchini-Scallion Cakes

Avocado and Hummus Wraps

Arugula Salad with Black Quinoa and Green Goddess Dressing

Butternut Squash Lasagna – I love Giada’s recipe, it’s the best and it’s always a hit!

Last but not least, don’t forget dessert! Easy Vegan Key Lime Pie

THE PLAYLIST

While the sun is going down and you and your guests are enjoying a beautiful al-fresco setting, delicious food and drinks, great conversation and intellectual wisdoms, it will be hard to imagine that real life today is full of plastic and artificial foods. Why, when it can be this good?
