Got the Summer Blues?

Don’t beat ‘em; join ‘em with this fabulous summer party! Step into the world of the Mississippi delta with some Memphis Blues, Dixieland Jazz, and Zydeco music for a rocking Creole style hoe-down.

Longing for the lazy days of summer? A sizzling party like this will help you bring to mind those balmy breezes and hot summer days.

ATMOSPHERE

In the heart of Dixie, the sound of cicadas at night, the heat, the colors, and the music are the essence of life. In the Mississippi delta, people understand that family and friends are the true color of life, and celebrate they do with stimulating parties for all the senses!

This is definitely an outdoor party…the sounds of zydeco, Memphis Blues, and a little Dixieland jazz set the mood. You can almost hear those boots stomping already!

For this celebration, I recommend a color palette of blues, purples, greens, reds, and yellows…in other words, fruity brights, with Mardis Gras colors running throughout. The more colorful the better! More is more on this occasion.

Your guests should arrive to an area decorated with balloons and paper lanterns or into a backyard setting or patio decorated with lights strung everywhere (yes, your holiday lights will do here!) If you have a barn, even better! If not, and for most people it’s a big NOT, a few hay bales are nice touches. Some rustic picnic tables and or benches are also great additions here. I also recommend renting a parquet dance floor, available for delivery.

For some down home charm, your tables should have red-checkered tablecloths, old fashioned colored glass lanterns as centerpieces, of course butter and homemade rolls. Clear glass chargers are fun with white plates on top. Have ice water on each table and tumblers at each place setting. Use beaded napkin rings. Make them yourself with gold, red, purple, and green beads!

Greet your quests upon their arrival with the signature cocktail for this party, the SMIRNOFF® Blueberry Dream cocktail, a refreshing form of lemonade that is sure to wake up the palette for some excellent Creole fare.

As this successful party winds down and you say so long to summer, your guest will bid you Au revoir mes amis, et merci beaucoup in their best French Creole accent!

Soiree By The Sea

Waves softly rolling in. Seagulls gliding to their roosts, their mates calling them home. Images of the sea and its bounty. The beautiful life that we cannot see, the reefs, the wonderful colors of nature, the salty smell that brings ions into our souls.

My dream dinner is a Soiree by the Sea…accents of weathered driftwood…white linen tablecloths; candles and lights strung overhead amongst the palms. Right on the beach, dinner served at sunset. Could that sound any better? Not on your life, and I have a plan on how to do just that!

If you have access to a private beach, anything goes, and this one beats them all for ambiance. If not, some public beaches allow private parties with a permit.

ATMOSPHERE

The ocean is your atmosphere! But to add the human element of fine dining and languishing by the sea, you should conspire for elegant toasts to those you love and admire; create delicious delights from the sea and serve cocktails that would make a mermaid want to join you from her sea-bar. Create a dreamlike atmosphere that will not soon be forgotten!

I love natural here…from colors to food; everything should be as organic as possible.

With a color palette inspired by your setting, tone on tone whites abound. The weathered grays and tans of driftwood and color of seashells will compliment your setting.

To make a nice contrast, bring in antique chairs, yes, right on the beach!  Whatever old wood table you can find will do. If that is not an option, folding chairs and tables with white slipcovers, easily found online, are a breeze. The key is, the more casual the furnishings, the more elegant the table setting, should be.

Another idea is to actually put large pillows down right on the beach and create a Japanese style table close to the sand. This can be done with even boards on cinder blocks then cover elegantly with table linens.

Centerpieces should come from the sea. Driftwood, large vases filled with shells, white candles at every seat and all around the setting. Old palm fronds can be laid around the center of the table. Fisherman’s nets can be your table runner. Anything goes! Go to local antique shops in a beach town, and you will have a ball searching for objects to use for your party!

Because this soiree takes place by the sea, wind is always very possible, heavier objects are better, so bring out all your white linens, plates, and heavier crystal. Not only more beautiful, but more practical here!

Citronella torches are also wonderful ambiance additions.

At each place setting, use a shell with a hole, using thin natural string; tie a place card to the shell. Use fishing weights or crab pot buoys to weigh down table covers.

Preparing and transporting the food might worry you, but don’t! If you create a menu that is easy and transportable, it will all be done ahead of time and actually once you are at the beach, all you will have to do is decorate. It would be nice to have some sort of folding table besides the dining table to arrange your food.

There are containers that can be purchased that will keep food warm you can also find these at party supply stores.

Flowers are always a great addition to a beach setting as well.

Bahama Mama Party!

Bring your inner Bahama Mama to life…all the girls dress in tropical attire…celebrate being your most beautiful best, and the guys can enjoy the scenery!

ATMOSPHERE

  • Tables can be draped with fun summery colors. I recommend a color palette of chartreuse, yellow, tangerine and turquoise.  Grass skirts around each table complete the look! I like low clear bowls of water with blue food coloring with floating candles, adding blue water to the scene enhances that Caribbean feeling. Get cheap, colorful flip-flops and scatter them around all the tables (in the Bahamas, flip-flops are the footwear of choice!)
  • Add beach balls, hula hoops, surfboards and create your own Tiki Hut table as the bar!
  • I love how the Lolita Flip-flop acrylic-ware completes the look…bring the party outside!!
  • Girls…wear a white t-shirt or tank top. Provide a pareo for each girlfriend!
  • Guys wear your shorts or best beachwear.
  • Add games like limbo to the scene!!
  • Serve delicious Bahama Mama Cocktails!
  • Have a flower for each girl’s hair!
  • Fly away and laugh as Caribbean music and warm breezes caress the senses.
  • For a party favor, use SMIRNOFF® Vanilla Vodka minis tied with colorful raffia for each guest!!

Twice as Nice…with Ice!

Weddings. Graduation. Memorial Day. Summer BBQs. ‘Tis the season for outdoor entertaining – which means lots of wine drinking opportunities! How can you enjoy all of the parties without being the life of the party? My secret: ice. Yep, when drinking white wine in a busy social season, I put some ice in it. The ice dilutes the alcohol and provides some hydration – two keys to pacing yourself. So enjoy yourself (responsibly)!

Cheers! ~ Lolita xo
